The Pogues demonstreerde halverwege de jaren 80 dat de "spirit" van punk prima ì te combineren was met traditionele Ierse volksmuziek. Het karakteristiek ì stemgeluid van Shane MacGowan in combinatie met poëtische, maar ook politiek ì getinte teksten leverde The Pogues grote successen op in Groot Brittannie en de ì VS. Dat deze groep niet alleen radicaal was, maar ook humoristisch blijkt ì duidelijk uit hun grootste hit, de Christmas Carol "Fairy Tale Of New York". Het ì album 'The Ultimate Collection'geeft een mooi overzicht van deze legendarische ì band. Ook bevat het een bonus disc(nr 23 t/m 44) met het live optreden @ The Brixton Academy in 2001.
